Fitted wardrobe in Streatham Hill with Shaker-style doors

This bedroom wardrobe in Streatham Hill runs along one wall, from the corner to the door frame, and up to the ceiling. The doors are Shaker style with round white knobs. Behind them are a hanging bay with drawers underneath and a bay of pigeonhole shelving. The photos were taken while the doors were still unpainted MDF.

Built in our workshop, then changed inside

The carcass was built in our workshop first. The photo here shows it at that stage: two columns of shelves and a wide open bay. The client later changed the arrangement of the interior, and the finished wardrobe has a hanging rail over two drawers and a bay of pigeonhole shelving instead. Building the carcass first meant the fit to the room was settled, and the inside could still be changed.

What is inside the wardrobe

The hanging bay has a rail with a shelf above it and two drawers below. Long items hang from the rail, and folded clothes go in the drawers.

Pigeonhole shelving

The next bay is fitted with pigeonhole shelving. Compartments this size suit shoes, bags or folded knitwear.

Shaker-style doors

A Shaker door is a flat panel set in a plain frame, with no mouldings or decoration. It sits comfortably next to existing skirting, cornice and door casings. The doors here hang on concealed hinges and have round white knobs.

Fitted to the wall, ceiling and door frame

The wardrobe goes right up to the ceiling and stops at the door frame, with a light switch on the wall beside it. A fitted wardrobe is cut to the room, so there is no gap on top for dust to collect and no dead space at the sides, which a freestanding wardrobe or a flat-pack unit usually leaves. Every wardrobe we build is measured on site.

Frequently asked questions about fitted wardrobes in Streatham Hill

Do you build fitted wardrobes in Streatham Hill?

Yes. Streatham Hill is part of our regular working area in South London, along with Streatham, Balham, Tooting and Clapham. We work from Carshalton.

What is a Shaker-style wardrobe door?

A flat panel set in a plain frame, without mouldings. It is a simple, traditional style that can be painted in any colour.

Can one wardrobe have hanging space, drawers and shelves?

Yes. This Streatham Hill wardrobe has all three in one carcass: a hanging rail, two drawers and pigeonhole shelving. The layout is decided from what you need to store.

Can the inside of a fitted wardrobe be changed after the carcass is built?

Yes, to a point. On this wardrobe the client changed the interior layout after the carcass was built, and it was reworked with a hanging rail over drawers and pigeonhole shelving. The outside dimensions are fixed by the room, so the earlier the layout is settled, the simpler the work.

How long does it take to fit a wardrobe?

A standard fitted wardrobe usually takes 1 to 2 days to install on site. The whole job, from sign-off through design, production and fitting, typically runs 1 to 2 weeks.

How much does a fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, the door style and what goes inside. Our guide to bespoke fitted furniture costs in Surrey explains what drives the price.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes. Our fitted furniture has a 5-year structural guarantee covering hinges, runners and frames, and free adjustments within 6 months of installation.
